Valentines Gift

Valentine’s day is almost upon us yet again and so the search is well underway to find the perfect gift. This is only the third one with my boyfriend but already it is getting difficult to think up new, interesting and practical gifts so I have no idea how people who have been together for 30 years think up ideas!

With my boyfriend moving in recently I thought that storage options might be quite a good idea, not a very ‘sexy’ option but quite practical. I always thought women had a lot of knick knacks but it turns out guys have just as many if not more! The only trouble with that is I have limited shelf and top space in my room so it is looking rather cluttered at the moment. I’m not so unromantic that I’ll just get him storage boxes so I’m trying to find some twist upon the concept and find a romantic gesture to it. I think I might have found a couple of options and a few sideways thoughts that have distracted me slightly. My favourite ‘distraction’ was a photo tree, it is a simple concept where you have bendy wires with clips on the end to pop pictures in, a great idea to fill it with photos of us but does rather add to the knick knack collection!

So I’ve come across a great storage solution that includes the photo idea with the storage solution, you can get wooden boxes that have spaces in the lid to place photos in. These boxes come in all sizes and shapes with compartments and without. These are perfect for the gist, I can add in any pictures I want to help brighten up the room and add his touch to it while providing a great storage solution for his bits and bobs.

Wall Decorations

After Christmas it can be hard to know exactly what to do with the cards you have received and any leftover wrapping paper. Sometimes you can receive some really nice looking cards that you just don’t want to throw them away but at the same time it seems a real shame to keep them in a box somewhere in the back of a cupboard. The same can be said about wrapping paper, you can get some really pretty ones that it does seem a shame to use them as wrapping paper only to be ripped off the presents and chucked away not to see the light of day again.

However if you think outside the box then it is quite easy to find some uses for both cards and wrapping paper. My favourite use for cards is as wall decorations; you can either put them in picture frames and dot them around the house or why not make a collage out of them. Buy a big frame and arrange the cards in it, this way you can easily group the cards.

With wrapping paper I find the best way to display it is to place it on a frame or even a box lid, simply wrap the frame with the wrapping paper and there you have it. An individual wall decoration that you can place anywhere in your home to help brighten up a plain wall or add a bit of contrast or texture to a room.

This principal can also be used with birthday cards or a variety of everyday items. I’ve seen it done with samples of carpets, very similar to wall hangings, or even with pressed flowers for a bouquet that has sentimental value. The only limit to what you can make to brighten up your walls is your imagination.

I am sure you will all be pleased to know I’m still sticking with the crocheting, unfortunately the cushion cover has gone by the way side and I have moved on to something a bit more complicated. I’m making a blanket for my bed, but not any old blanket, one made up of hexagons! That’s [...]
