Toilet Doll

I am sure you will all be pleased to know I’m still sticking with the crocheting, unfortunately the cushion cover has gone by the way side and I have moved on to something a bit more complicated. I’m making a blanket for my bed, but not any old blanket, one made up of hexagons! That’s right, long gone are the days of your Gran making squares to sew into blankets (though they do have a nostalgic charm to them) and hexagons are the latest thing. Believe it or not they are far easier to make than they look – well if I can make then a few weeks after starting they must be! So I will keep you updated on my progress with it.

Working on this it got me wondering what else could be updated with a modern twist around the home and in turn give me some great ‘individual’ Christmas gifts to give family and friends that you just cannot buy in the shops. Thinking about those items that seem to be old fashioned and not even kitsch the first thing that springs to mind is the toilet roll doll. This ‘delightful’ item has graced homes across the country for many a year but is looking dated now, is there any way to update her as there is something uniquely charming about the idea, especially in comparison to the plastic bags they come in.

Many people are now investing in decorated boxes to keep their toilet rolls out of the way, these are ideal if you want to store a large supply, but what about a smaller collection? I have seen examples of people using food covers, the wire or plastic half circles used to protect food at picnics, decorated to place over toilet rolls but I think the most fun ones I have come across are the evolved versions of the doll. That’s right the doll has evolved in to animals, teddy bears and even aliens! That’s right these things actually exist and the best thing about these, you can get crochet patterns for them! Guess what my family are getting for Christmas, not to find something as kitsch for my friends, watch this space for what I find.
